Regional aircraft leasing continues to play a vital role in Africa's evolving aviation landscape, with Dublin-based lessor Abelo leasing two ATR 72-600 aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines Group. The aircraft will be operated by Air Congo, Ethiopian Airlines' partner airline, to bolster domestic and regional connectivity across the continent.
According to Abelo CEO Stephen Gorman, "The African market represents significant opportunities for Abelo and for the large turboprop segment." This strategic investment highlights the growing importance of modern, fuel-efficient turboprops in serving regional markets, especially in less accessible areas.
Ella Nethersole, Deputy Editor of Aviation Week Network publications Arabian Aerospace and African Aerospace, explained that these aircraft will support Ethiopia’s efforts to expand its regional network using contemporary aircraft. The ATR 72-600 model is recognized for its reliability and operational efficiency, making it ideal for such routes.
"This leasing arrangement aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ ambitions to modernize its fleet and increase regional services," said Ella Nethersole.
The deal underscores the strategic importance of leasing in expanding airline capacity and regional connectivity, as African carriers seek versatile and cost-effective solutions. Ethiopian Airlines’ continued fleet enhancement reflects its commitment to strengthening its position as the leading airline across Africa.
Overall, this leasing agreement signifies a positive step forward for regional aviation markets, supporting economic growth and improved mobility on the continent.
