Air Canada has announced a firm order for eight Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft, marking a significant step in its fleet expansion and modernization plans. The airline intends to leverage the A350-1000’s extended range of up to 9,000 nautical miles to facilitate non-stop flights connecting Canada with rapidly growing markets in Asia and Australia.
Mark Galardo, Air Canada's Chief Commercial Officer, explained that the aircraft supports the airline’s ambition for global reach and efficiency. The A350-1000's advanced technology and lower operating costs will help Air Canada unlock new long-haul opportunities, enhancing its competitive position and passenger experience.
Technological and Environmental Innovations
The aircraft features the Airbus Airspace cabin, known for quieter, more comfortable conditions for long-distance travelers. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce engines and constructed with lightweight materials, the A350-1000 offers a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions compared to older models. Importantly, the aircraft is compatible with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus targeting 100% SAF capability by 2030.
Benoit de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President, reaffirmed the aircraft's status as the most technologically advanced widebody, supporting not only fleet modernization but also environmental goals and enhanced customer satisfaction. As of early 2026, Airbus's A350 family had garnered over 1,500 orders from 67 airlines worldwide, exemplifying its popularity and impact on the industry.
