Air France-KLM has projected a cost increase of EUR7.5 million (USD8.8 million) due to its failure to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set for 2025. The group's 2025 financial statements reveal that it did not achieve a 10% reduction per revenue tonne-kilometer compared to 2019, impacting its sustainability-linked bonds issued in January 2023. These bonds, totaling EUR1 billion, impose penalties such as a redemption premium and increased coupons when targets are missed.
The company cited delays in fleet renewal, engine issues affecting aircraft like the A220-300, and higher fuel consumption on certain routes amid geopolitical disruptions as key reasons for the shortfall. These operational challenges have hindered the group's environmental goals and financial planning, reflecting broader issues within the aviation industry's efforts toward sustainable growth.
