Air New Zealand plans to increase capacity on several key domestic routes in New Zealand from March through October 2026. These enhancements aim to support the country's domestic growth, improve business connectivity, and enhance tourism opportunities. The airline's General Manager of Short Haul and Domestic, Lucy Hall, stated that the network is continually reviewed to meet customer demands and regional development needs.
Among the planned improvements, the Auckland–Queenstown route will see a 9% increase in seats, with approximately 50,000 additional seats allocated for the year. The Christchurch–Hamilton route is set to operate daily jet services starting February 2026, increasing capacity by 17%. Capacity on routes to Napier, Nelson, Rotorua, Tauranga, and Invercargill will also be expanded. Specifically, the Auckland–Rotorua route will be upgraded with an ATR aircraft, boosting capacity by 7% and offering more business-friendly schedules, including morning and evening flights to accommodate same-day travel needs.
These capacity upgrades are part of Air New Zealand's strategy to maintain connectivity across regions, support regional economic growth, and provide more options for travelers. The airline emphasizes its commitment to supporting New Zealand’s economic and tourism sectors through these infrastructure enhancements.
