Air Vanuatu's ATR72-600 aircraft, MSN 1358, YJ-AV73, is expected to return to service by the end of February 2026, following a grounding since August 2025 due to engine maintenance issues. The aircraft's downtime has led the airline to cut back on domestic flights, relying instead on wet-leased capacity from Air Calédonie to maintain essential routes between Port Vila, Espiritu Santo, and Tanna.

The Vanuatu government allocated VUV300 million (USD 2.5 million) in September 2025 to fund necessary repairs for the aircraft, which is part of broader efforts to restore regional air connectivity. The delay was primarily caused by a worldwide shortage of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M engines. Recently, Air Vanuatu added a second DHC-6-300 Twin Otter, MSN 481, to its fleet, and plans are underway to acquire an ATR42 by 2030 to further expand capacity and enhance domestic operations.

Following its emergence from liquidation in 2024, the airline now operates one ATR72-600 and three DHC-6-300 aircraft. Its operations are focused on connecting regional destinations, including Toulouse Blagnac, Nouméa Magenta, Espiritu Santo, Port Vila, and Tanna. The return of the ATR72-600 is a key step toward restoring full capacity and improving domestic air travel for residents and tourists alike.

The repair and reintroduction of the aircraft are considered crucial for the airline’s future growth. With ongoing fleet enhancements, Air Vanuatu aims to support the local economy and improve regional connectivity, ensuring reliable air services for its customers.
