AirAsia is expanding its operations in Australia by adding new routes and increasing flight frequencies, reflecting a surge in passenger demand. The airline is launching its inaugural flight from Melbourne to Bali on 20 March 2026, which will create over 130,000 seats annually and provide travelers in Victoria more choices. Additionally, the airline is increasing services to Bali from Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth, alongside maintaining daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney and Melbourne.

However, AirAsia announced the suspension of its routes connecting Darwin to Kuala Lumpur and Bali, starting from late April 2026, citing low passenger numbers as the reason. These flights are operated by subsidiaries within the AirAsia Group, and the airline is reallocating capacity to other Australian cities to maximize operational efficiency. The network expansion aims to serve nearly a million passengers annually and to reach up to 100 weekly flights during peak seasons, illustrating the airline's confidence in the Australian market’s growth.

Strategic Outlook and Market Commitment

Amanda Woo, Chief Commercial Officer of AirAsia X, reiterated the importance of Australia for the airline, emphasizing that capacity adjustments are part of long-term strategic planning. The airline offers seamless connections through its Fly-Thru service, linking travelers from Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth to over 150 destinations across Asia and beyond, including London, Istanbul, Cebu, and Osaka. The decision to suspend Darwin routes aligns with the airline’s focus on higher-demand routes, ensuring a sustainable growth trajectory in the region.

Passengers affected by the route suspension are being contacted directly, and the airline remains committed to providing affordable access for Australian travelers to Asia and the world.
