AirAsia X is set to reestablish its presence in the UK market by launching a new service connecting Kuala Lumpur with London Gatwick via Bahrain starting June 26. The airline will operate the route using Airbus A330 aircraft, with Bahrain positioned as a developing hub in its expanding network strategy.
The Malaysian carrier previously served the UK from 2009, operating out of Stansted before moving to Gatwick, but withdrew in 2012 amid high fuel prices and taxes despite strong load factors. The company has indicated its interest in returning to London for several years, with recent efforts including the resumption of flights to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen late last year.
Strategic Expansion and Market Outlook
Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia X, commented, "Our return to London marks a significant milestone, and we are excited to begin operations at Gatwick this June. This route will enable UK travelers to connect affordably to Bahrain, ASEAN, and beyond." The route aims to capture the substantial connecting traffic between the UK and Malaysia, which predominantly involves one-stop markets through Middle Eastern and Singaporean hubs.
Most UK-Malaysia flights currently operate from Heathrow, operated by British Airways and Malaysia Airlines. The airline’s fleet expansion includes 14 A330-900s on order, supporting its European market ambitions.
This move underscores AirAsia X's broader strategy to rebuild its European network footprint, supported by agreements to develop Bahrain as a regional hub connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The company’s efforts reflect its goal to reenter a market it exited over ten years ago and adapt to changing industry dynamics.
