Aircraft parts fraud case results in jail sentence for company director

The recent court proceedings have resulted in the sentencing of a British aircraft parts company's director for his role in a significant fraud scheme. Jose Alejandro Zamora Yrala was sentenced to four years and eight months of imprisonment after admitting to selling approximately 60,000 engine parts with forged documentation between 2019 and 2023. The parts, primarily for the CFM56 engine series used on popular commercial aircraft such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, were sold for nearly £7 million.

The fraud came to light when an engineer at TAP Air Portugal questioned the origin of a part, prompting investigations that revealed the documents were counterfeit. The Serious Fraud Office uncovered that Zamora Yrala produced falsified Authorised Release Certificates, some obtained from an accomplice and others created with the assistance of a graphic designer, to falsely certify the parts as airworthy.

This scheme involved fabricating evidence of parts' origins and creating a fake business profile, which allowed the suspect to supply illegal components to major carriers including Ryanair, American Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and TAP Air Portugal. The illicit parts entered the global aviation supply chain, leading to inspections, aircraft grounding, and significant financial losses in the aviation industry.

Officials highlighted the difficulty in tracking the true source of the suspect engine components, which complicates efforts to ensure air safety. Zamora Yrala's criminal activities also included fabricating employee and supplier details to lend credibility to his operations. In addition to his prison sentence, he is disqualified from acting as a company director for eight years, and further legal actions concerning proceeds of crime are imminent. A related investigation by Portuguese authorities is ongoing but has not yet concluded.
