AirlineRatings.com’s 2026 safety rankings have crowned Etihad Airways as the safest full-service airline in the world, marking a milestone for a Gulf carrier in this prestigious category. The annual assessment evaluates 320 airlines worldwide, considering safety records, operational transparency, and recent turbulence management efforts. The rankings also highlight Singapore Airlines' return to the top ranks following recent safety reviews, alongside new entrants STARLUX and Fiji Airways.

One of the key factors influencing this year’s rankings is turbulence prevention, which AirlineRatings.com now emphasizes due to turbulence being a leading cause of in-flight injuries. CEO Sharon Petersen explained that the narrow margin between the top airlines, with less than four points separating the leaders, underscores the high safety standards across the industry. She cited Etihad’s youthful fleet, advanced cockpit safety features, and comprehensive safety audits as pivotal to its top recognition.

Low-cost airlines also recognized for safety

In the low-cost segment, HK Express maintained its position as the safest for 2026, attributed to its modern fleet, low incident rate, and rigorous safety culture. The report confirms that incident rates among the best airlines are extremely low, generally between 0.002 and 0.09 per flight, reflecting a highly disciplined industry where safety performance is consistently high.

Overall, aviation safety continues to advance through a combination of technological improvements, safety culture development, and focused risk management. Industry experts emphasize that the small differences in safety metrics among top-ranked airlines do not indicate meaningful safety gaps, but instead signify that all are operating at exemplary standards. This assures travelers that the global airline industry remains committed to maintaining and improving safety for all passengers.
