Akasa Air has achieved a significant milestone in Indian and global aviation by becoming a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This development, announced on January 9, 2026, underscores the airline’s rapid growth since its launch in August 2022 and its commitment to maintaining high safety and operational standards.

Founded with the goal of connecting major cities and emerging markets across India via low-cost, efficient flights, Akasa Air has expanded its fleet to 31 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Its consisent focus on safety was validated through the completion of the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) in December 2025, marking its compliance with international safety benchmarks despite its relatively brief history.

India’s Growing Aviation Sector

India is among the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, supported by increasing passenger numbers and strategic infrastructure developments. Akasa Air joins four other Indian carriers—Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and SpiceJet—in IATA, providing the airline with opportunities for industry participation and global collaboration.

"India’s aviation industry supports millions of jobs and is vital for economic growth," said Sheldon Hee, IATA Associate Vice President for Asia-Pacific. "Akasa Air’s membership enriches India’s voice in international aviation policy."

Vinay Dube, CEO of Akasa Air, emphasized that the airline’s IATA membership demonstrates their dedication to safety, sustainability, and future expansion. The airline plans to continue increasing its fleet, adding new routes, and strengthening its presence internationally while leveraging IATA’s network for strategic growth.

This achievement highlights India's expanding influence in global aviation and signals further opportunities for enhanced passenger connectivity, safety, and service quality. As Akasa Air continues to grow, its role on the international stage is expected to strengthen, contributing to India’s stature as a major aviation hub.
