Archer Aviation is planning to enhance its future air taxi services by integrating SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband into its Midnight eVTOL aircraft, which is designed to carry four passengers. The company announced that this partnership aims to provide onboard Wi-Fi connectivity for passengers and help streamline flight operations.
As the first eVTOL firm to adopt Starlink, Archer's move follows a broader industry trend among major airlines seeking reliable satellite internet for in-flight use. The aircraft will operate at low altitudes, between 1,500 and 4,000 feet, potentially allowing passengers to connect to ground-based towers during short city hops, contingent on regulatory approval.
Beyond connectivity, Archer aspires to develop an urban air mobility network in Miami and aims to secure type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, a process estimated to take five to nine years. The company also secured a deal to serve as the exclusive air-taxi provider for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Despite these ambitions, aviation experts remain skeptical about the timeline for widespread commercial deployment.
Archer is actively pursuing certification and operational authorization in several countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, with the goal of offering rapid intra-city transportation solutions. The integration of Starlink could significantly influence future connectivity standards for autonomous and manned urban air vehicles, ensuring both operational efficiency and passenger experience are optimized.
