The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published a report underscoring the significant role that aviation plays in Uzbekistan's economy. The report highlights employment figures, contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), and the country's burgeoning role as a transit and tourism hub.

According to the data, approximately 12,400 individuals are directly employed in Uzbekistan's aviation sector, which generates USD 96.5 million in economic output annually. The wider supply chain, along with tourism activities, results in a total economic contribution of USD 795.5 million, supporting more than 128,000 jobs.

Strategic Infrastructure and Policy Priorities

Uzbekistan’s strategic geographical location in Central Asia bolsters its potential as a regional transit hub connecting Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe. The government’s investments in new airports—particularly in Tashkent, Bukhara, and Urgench—are pivotal, although ensuring cost competitiveness remains critical for sustained growth.

Additionally, the country aims to advance its production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aligning with international standards to facilitate environmental goals and international cooperation. Emphasizing investment in human capital, policy recommendations include upskilling the workforce to support expanding aviation needs.

"Uzbekistan’s continued investment in infrastructure, safety, and human resources has been key to building resilience in its aviation industry," said Rafael Schvartzman, IATA Regional Vice President for Europe.

Furthermore, air cargo transport in Uzbekistan increased significantly, with 66,600 tonnes moved through its airports in 2023, enhancing its role as a logistics hub. The newly operational cargo terminal at Tashkent Airport and expanding facilities at Navoi are expected to further boost cargo volumes.

The report emphasizes that Uzbekistan's geographical position and investments will foster greater foreign investment, tourism, and trade, supporting its evolution as a critical east-west transit corridor. Overall, the aviation sector's growth is seen as vital for the country's economic development and regional integration.
