This week, the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAF) is featured for its ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and operational capabilities. Since initiating its modernization plan in 2004 with the publication of the Brunei Defense White Paper, the RBAF has accelerated its upgrade program to include the integration of small drones and modernization of its aircraft assets.
The fleet includes aircraft such as the Airbus H145, Sikorsky S-70, and Airbus CN235/C295, which serve various roles including transport, maritime patrol, and reconnaissance. Recently, the Sikorsky S-70i participated in the 30th edition of the Combatant Exercise, CARAT, aimed at improving naval coordination onboard U.S. vessels.
Focus on Small Unmanned Systems
Experts note that the RBAF's emphasis on small unmanned systems enhances their surveillance and tactical capabilities. This strategic direction aligns with regional security needs and Brunei's aim to maintain an agile and modern force capable of regional cooperation.
"The ongoing modernization reflects Brunei’s strategic emphasis on versatile and small-scale drone technology that supports both surveillance and tactical operations," said Anna Sliwon-Stewart, senior analyst with the Aviation Week Defense Data Team.lockquote>The White Paper from 2004 laid the foundation for these developments, and recent exercises demonstrate the focus on interoperability and regional influence. Brunei continues to expand its fleet and upgrade its systems to adapt to evolving security environments.
