Citilink will assume operation of the Jakarta to Bengkulu route from Garuda Indonesia starting April 1, 2026. This change follows the decision by Garuda Indonesia to reduce service on the route due to low demand and yield concerns. Citilink will deploy Airbus A320-200N aircraft for this route, replacing Garuda's larger aircraft and aligning with its network expansion plans.
The flight slot transfer is part of broader network reorganization by Garuda, which has been optimizing its route portfolio and reducing overlaps with its low-cost affiliate, Citilink. The move aims to prevent cannibalization of their respective markets, as indicated by industry reports. Governor Helmi Hasan of Bengkulu expressed concern over the cutbacks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining air connectivity to the provincial capital.
Currently, Garuda Indonesia operates daily flights on the route using Boeing 737-800 aircraft until March 28. After this date, Citilink will take over with increased frequency, adding a second daily service. The transition reflects a strategic focus on regional route optimization and cost-effective operations throughout Indonesia's domestic network.
The change is expected to have economic implications for Bengkulu, which relies on air links to Jakarta for tourism and business. Stakeholders are working to ensure continued connectivity, as local authorities seek dialogue with airlines and regulators to address future service levels. This shift exemplifies industry trends where airlines refine their networks to better match demand and financial sustainability.
