Delta Air Lines has announced a major aircraft procurement to support its international service expansion and fleet renewal. The airline has placed its first direct order for up to 60 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including a firm order for 30 units of the 787-10 variant, with options for up to 30 more of the largest Dreamliner model. This move aims to enhance Delta’s long-haul capabilities on transatlantic and South American routes, providing modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.

"Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come," stated CEO Ed Bastian. He emphasized the importance of operating the newest aircraft to maintain service quality across its global network. The 787-10 offers capacity for up to 336 passengers and is 25% more fuel-efficient than its predecessors, representing a significant reduction in operating costs.

Partnership and Future Outlook

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the 787 Dreamliner’s efficiency, range, and passenger comfort align with Delta's international growth and modernization strategy. Boeing has supplied over 460 aircraft to Delta over recent decades, encompassing most of Boeing’s single-aisle and widebody families. The new order further consolidates this relationship and supports U.S. aerospace manufacturing jobs.

Delta’s total order book now includes 130 Boeing airplanes, including a previously announced order for 100 737-10 jets. The complementary capabilities of the 787-10 and 737-10 will enable Delta to increase passenger capacity on diverse routes, fostering expanded network flexibility and growth.
