Eastar Jet, South Korea's low-cost carrier, is contemplating the addition of widebody aircraft, specifically Boeing 787 models, to enable long-haul services from Seoul Gimpo Airport. According to Yonhap News Agency, the airline is in the process of forming an internal task force and has initiated discussions with Boeing about the supply of large aircraft. The decision follows the company's current fleet of Boeing B737-800 and B737-8 aircraft, with plans to expand its fleet with two additional units of the B737-8.
The potential incorporation of B787 aircraft would mark Eastar Jet's first foray into widebody operations, opening routes to destinations such as Los Angeles International Airport and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The airline has not historically operated widebody aircraft but sees this as a strategic move to offer long-distance services.
Although specific details regarding the B787 variant remain undisclosed, the airline has confirmed its intention to make an official announcement once the specifics and timelines are finalized. The move is seen as a significant evolution for Eastar Jet, enhancing its international reach and competitive standing in the region.
