Ethiopia has begun the construction of Bishoftu International Airport, a new major aviation facility intended to alleviate congestion at Bole Addis Ababa International Airport. With a projected capacity of 110 million passengers annually, the airport aims to strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a key global aviation hub. Scheduled to open in 2030, the project features a phased development plan, starting with a passenger terminal capable of accommodating 60 million travelers, multiple runways, and extensive aircraft parking stands.

The design, crafted by Zaha Hadid Architects, emphasizes modernity and scalability, with full expansion planned to include four runways, a broader airport city, and improved cargo facilities. The initiative is driven by Ethiopian Airlines, which transported over 17 million passengers in 2023/2024 and plans to expand its fleet to over 300 aircraft by 2040. The airline’s growth is a core element of Ethiopia's national strategy to position itself at the forefront of African and global aviation.

"This project is a significant milestone for Ethiopia and Africa," said Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. "It will transform Addis Ababa into a vital international transit point, reducing reliance on Middle Eastern hubs and supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area."

Furthermore, Ethiopian Airlines maintains a strong safety record with a seven-star rating from AirlineRatings.com, underscoring its operational standards. The new airport complements the airline's fleet expansion, which includes sophisticated aircraft like Airbus A350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners, alongside the upcoming Boeing 777X. Overall, the development signifies Ethiopia’s aspiration to elevate its position in global aviation and create substantial economic benefits for the region.
