Ethiopian Airlines announced plans to launch flights to Australia in 2028, aiming to finalize its presence on every continent. Currently serving 145 cities across five continents, the airline's expansion into Australia depends on acquiring at least two wide-body aircraft capable of ultra-long-haul routes. The project has experienced delays due to manufacturing and supply chain constraints.
According to Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, the airline will most likely begin flying to Australia in 2028, either by renting or purchasing suitable aircraft. The timing of this expansion is contingent on aircraft availability, with delivery timelines currently affected by global supply chain issues. Ethiopian Airlines has shortlisted two Australian cities for the new routes, with a final decision pending aircraft acquisition.
This strategic move would enhance Africa–Asia-Pacific connectivity, boosting trade and tourism, and further establishing Ethiopian Airlines as Africa's leading airline. The airline underscores that its success relies on the prompt delivery of aircraft and operational readiness to meet its long-haul ambitions.
