Etihad Airways is actively engaged in discussions with Airbus regarding potential new aircraft orders, including models such as the Airbus A350 and A330neo. The airline, which currently operates nine A350-1000s, is exploring further fleet expansion as part of its long-term growth strategy outlined in the Journey 2030 initiative. This plan aims to increase the airline's network to over 125 destinations and potentially double its fleet to 160 aircraft by 2045.
The discussions come ahead of the Dubai Airshow, providing a strategic opportunity for announcements or negotiations concerning future aircraft acquisitions. Etihad has previously operated Airbus A330 models but has since retired these types in favor of a more streamlined fleet. The airline's focus is on high-capacity, long-haul markets, leveraging its existing Airbus A350 fleet, with possible additional orders to meet emerging demand.
2025 Growth and Future Outlook
In 2025, Etihad Airways has achieved significant milestones, including reaching 300 daily scheduled flights and carrying over 16 million passengers in the first nine months. The airline's fleet has grown to 115 aircraft, with a focus on expanding routes to Europe and North America and enhancing connectivity. CEO Antonoaldo Neves emphasized the airline’s desire to deliver sustainable profitability and expand its global presence, including using aircraft like the A321LR for shorter, regional routes within the Gulf Cooperation Council, India, and Asia.
The airline’s strategic initiatives are designed to solidify its market position and enable sustainable, profitable growth over the coming decades, aligning with its vision to become a leading global carrier.
