The global market for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is expected to grow significantly over the next few years, with projections indicating it will reach $312 billion by 2029. This growth is fueled by worldwide efforts to adopt cleaner energy sources in aviation, supported by technological advances and policy commitments.

In Nigeria, aviation authorities are actively working to align with this global trend. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced initiatives to improve the fuel supply chain by establishing additional fuel farms at airports, upgrading storage facilities, and fostering partnerships to support SAF development. These measures aim to reduce logistics costs and enhance air connectivity across the country.

Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Safety

However, industry experts point out challenges such as a shortage of skilled personnel and the absence of standardized jet fuel certification processes. Engr. Peter Dia stressed that Nigeria’s crude oil could be refined into safe aviation fuel but emphasized the need for proper certification procedures. He also criticized current infrastructure planning, noting that some new airports lack fuel hydrants, which complicates fueling operations.

Additionally, airline representatives advocate for stronger collaboration with fuel marketers to negotiate prices and improve infrastructure at secondary airports. These steps are crucial to ensuring safety, cost-efficiency, and resilience in Nigeria's aviation sector as it transitions toward sustainable fuels.
