International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) officials announced the release of a new calculation method for 2024 that will determine airlines' carbon offsetting obligations under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This scheme is designed to promote the reduction of greenhouse gases from international flights.
The calculation, based on the latest growth data, allows participating states to determine the amount of CO₂ airlines must offset to maintain carbon neutrality amid expanding international air travel. Most airlines satisfying these requirements will purchase ICAO-approved carbon credits derived from projects such as methane capture, renewable energy, or forest protection.
Data submitted by 128 states covered 99% of the expected CO₂ emissions for 2024, with others' emissions estimates filling in the remaining figures, resulting in a comprehensive global assessment involving 138 states. This information ensures transparent and equitable offsetting obligations aligned with the framework established under the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
