Sarla Aviation, an Indian private aerospace company, has initiated ground testing of its prototype for an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a significant milestone in India's aerospace development. The demonstrator, named SYL-X1, is a half-scale model with a 7.5-meter wingspan, representing the largest privately developed eVTOL prototype in India.
The company developed this prototype within approximately nine months, demonstrating rapid progress and advanced engineering capabilities. Designed with certification standards in mind, the SYL-X1 aims to validate structural integrity, propulsion systems, and safety features at a meaningful scale as part of its pathway toward a full-scale aircraft.
Company Vision and Future Plans
Rakesh Gaonkar, Co-Founder and CTO of Sarla Aviation, stated that this milestone illustrates the potential of Indian engineering talent in aerospace, emphasizing the company's commitment to building aircraft that can be certified, produced, and operated entirely within India. The goal is to develop a scalable platform with the aim of manufacturing a 15-meter wingspan full-scale aircraft.
This achievement positions India among a select group of nations actively advancing next-generation vertical flight technology at an industrial level. Sarla Aviation has also delivered a full-scale static aircraft for the Bharat Mobility showcase and secured USD 13 million in funding to support its initiatives.
The company’s focus on electric propulsion aims to reduce operational complexity and costs, contributing to the growth of India's advanced air mobility ecosystem. By translating prototypes into commercial, certified aircraft, Sarla Aviation plans to establish a robust domestic aerospace industry capable of serving both national and global markets.
