The Indian aviation industry is confronting significant safety challenges amid operational disruptions by IndiGo, the country’s largest airline. A crisis in December caused hundreds of thousands of passengers to face cancellations and delays, highlighting systemic issues related to pilot fatigue and regulatory enforcement.

In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) introduced enhanced pilot safety regulations in January 2024, including increased mandatory rest hours and limited night duties. Although most airlines quickly adopted these measures, IndiGo’s failure to comply led to temporary exemptions and ongoing investigations, raising concerns over safety enforcement and industry oversight.

Regulatory and Industry Reactions

Experts warn that granting exemptions to IndiGo, which handles over 2,000 flights daily, sets a dangerous precedent and compromises passenger safety. The airline’s reluctance to implement new norms is compounded by a hiring freeze and stressful working conditions for pilots, with some insiders describing harsh contractual terms and excessive schedules.

"The rules were meant to enhance pilot and passenger safety. If you give exemptions, the whole intent is out of the window," said Captain Anil Rao, general secretary of the Airline Pilots Association of India.

The DGCA has announced ongoing efforts to enforce compliance, including the termination of some safety inspectors. Industry voices emphasize that strengthening enforcement and reducing pilot fatigue is crucial for sustainable growth and international credibility.

This crisis underscores the urgent need for India’s aviation sector to uphold high safety standards while balancing rapid expansion, with stronger regulatory oversight and independent investigations vital to prevent future disruptions.
