India's aviation safety under scrutiny as regulatory actions prioritize airline interests over safety measures

India's aviation industry is currently under scrutiny due to regulatory decisions that seem to prioritize airline profitability over passenger and crew safety. Regulatory authorities have suspended or diluted established safety protocols, particularly the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which are crucial for managing crew fatigue and ensuring safe flight operations. This has coincided with widespread flight cancellations by private airlines, especially Indigo, resulting in passenger inconvenience and rising safety concerns.

Across the years, India has struggled to uphold consistent safety standards. Despite the introduction of Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) to address crew fatigue back in 2007, airline operators and authorities have often moved to weaken or bypass these regulations. Court rulings in the past have recognized the importance of safety, but recent orders extending delays in enforcement risk further deterioration of oversight. The recent suspension of safety norms until early 2026 indicates a worrying trend of regulatory relaxation at the expense of safety.

Systemic Safety Concerns

Former officials and safety experts have voiced alarm over India’s lack of an independent civil aviation authority, a concern raised by the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2006. Multiple aircraft accidents since 2010 underline the urgency of reform. Critics argue that a lax attitude towards crew rest periods and scheduling exploits regulatory gaps, raising the probability of future accidents. These developments highlight a profound need for strong oversight and enforcement of safety regulations, not only to prevent incidents but to restore confidence in India’s civil aviation system.

Captain A. Ranganathan, an experienced safety adviser, emphasized that safety policies must remain uncompromising. He warned that relaxing regulations for commercial convenience could jeopardize passenger lives, leading to catastrophic consequences. Industry stakeholders warn that unless robust oversight is reestablished, the safety of millions of passengers flying within India remains at risk, inviting the possibility of another major aviation mishap.
