IndiGo Airlines has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321-200XLR, marking a significant step in its strategy to expand its long-haul route network. The aircraft, registered VT-NLA with MSN 12622, was ferried from Hamburg Finkenwerder via Abu Dhabi International to Delhi International Airport on January 6-7, 2026. Designed with 12 business class seats branded IndiGoStretch and 183 economy seats, it is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A33B2X engines.
The carrier intends to deploy this aircraft on routes that are currently too thin for its new Airbus A350-900s. IndiGo plans to introduce initial services from Mumbai and Delhi to Athens on January 23 and 24, respectively. The airline has announced plans to operate a total of eight A321XLRs by the year's end, with potential destinations including Denpasar and Istanbul Airport. The expansion aims to enhance connectivity for Indian travelers and capture a larger share of regional long-haul markets.
Currently, IndiGo operates a fleet comprising Airbus A320-200s, A320-200Ns, A321-200s, and ATR 72-600s. Its main hub at Delhi International Airport includes 424 aircraft, serving 141 destinations with a network of 719 routes and 2,231 daily flights. The addition of the XLRs is expected to make IndiGo more competitive in the long-haul segment, enabling it to serve routes with lower passenger loads profitably while supporting its regional growth objectives.
