Iridium Communications is actively working to enhance its satellite-based communication and safety solutions for the aviation industry. The company is currently testing its next-generation Certus satcom service through flight trials that support aircraft safety systems, aiming for FAA certification in the near future. A key part of this effort involves its joint venture with Aireon, which is pursuing a space-based VHF communications initiative to alleviate congestion and improve global aircraft tracking.

Iridium’s existing L-band satellite network supports cockpit data links for over 60,000 aircraft worldwide and underpins Aireon's global ADS-B flight tracking service. The company recently made significant progress toward certification, with several aircraft fitted with new avionics and participating in flight trials. According to CEO Matthew Desch, these developments could accelerate the deployment of Certus solutions into major aircraft manufacturers by 2027 or 2028.

Once certified, Certus will enable direct datalink communication capabilities over oceans, supporting systems like FANS-1/A for safe and efficient air traffic control. Competition is expected from other satellite service providers, such as Viasat’s SwiftBroadband-Safety product. Moreover, Aireon’s space-based VHF system could enable pilots to communicate with air traffic control using existing VHF radios via Iridium’s network, further transforming the aviation communication landscape.

Iridium's long-term relationship with air navigation service providers—through its Aireon joint venture—positions the company to significantly expand its presence in the aviation safety market. Every satellite in Iridium’s NEXT 66-satellite constellation carries Aireon’s payload, providing real-time aircraft surveillance. Desch highlighted the potential of this network to serve a market valued at over $1 billion, driven by the increasing demand for real-time aircraft data and surveillance.

Apart from aviation, Iridium is exploring standards for Uncrewed Aerial Systems and expanding its services in narrowband IoT, positioning itself for growth in multiple technological verticals. The company's spectrum assets are also in focus, particularly for direct-to-device services like D2D communications. Desch emphasized that Iridium sees substantial untapped market potential, with plans to grow and innovate within its current spectrum and technological capabilities.
