Japan Airlines has reached several significant milestones in its sustainability strategy in 2025, advancing its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The airline has launched operations at Japan’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Osaka, marking a crucial step toward domestic SAF manufacturing. Its first passenger flight powered by domestically produced SAF from Kansai International Airport to Shanghai underscores a shift toward greener air travel.

Further efforts include utilizing SAF derived from waste cooking oils through the Fry to Fly Project, with usage beginning in July 2025 on select flights from Haneda Airport. Japan Airlines has committed to replacing one percent of its jet fuel consumption with SAF by March 2026, demonstrating its dedication to reducing carbon emissions.

Development of Bioethanol Production and Strategic Investments

In October 2025, the airline commenced construction of a bioethanol demonstration plant at the Morisora Bio Refinery in Miyagi Prefecture. The plant, expected to produce over 1,000 kilolitres of bioethanol annually from local forest resources starting in 2027, aims to expand SAF availability across the industry.

"Expanding SAF use and investing in innovative production technologies are essential steps towards Japan Airlines’ vision of a sustainable future for aviation,"

said an industry spokesperson.

Additionally, Japan Airlines invested in the Breakthrough Energy Ventures Fund, supporting research to improve SAF efficiency and reduce costs, facilitating broader adoption worldwide.

Overall, these initiatives form part of JAL’s broader strategy to minimize environmental impacts, promote responsible fuel usage, and set industry standards. Leadership in sustainable aviation fuels positions Japan Airlines as a pioneer in transforming air travel into an environmentally responsible industry.
