KOTA BHARU, Kelantan: Two entrepreneurs from Kelantan have developed a process to convert used cooking oil into sustainable aviation fuel, an innovation that could have significant environmental and economic impacts. Muhammad Arif Arman Suddin, a former aircraft engineer, and Mohammad Azhan Shamsu Anuar used their expertise and extensive research over eight months to master the conversion process which adheres to international standards such as the ISCC CORSIA certification.
The process involves collecting used vegetable cooking oil from households, traders, and companies across Malaysia's East Coast and Perak, then filtering and processing it into jet fuel. Their company, Arjuna Dharma Global, now supplies processed oil to international aviation fuel suppliers, including markets in Amsterdam, Switzerland, and the United States, with the promise of reducing carbon emissions by up to four times compared to conventional kerosene. The venture generates a six-figure monthly income and highlights Malaysia's move towards commercialising sustainable aviation fuel before the end of 2025.
Arif Arman expressed hopes that more Malaysians will recognize the environmental and economic value of domestically sourced waste oil, emphasizing Malaysia’s future as a producer of clean, renewable aviation fuel, thus contributing to global efforts to lower carbon emissions.
