Alaska regional airline Kenai Aviation ceased operations abruptly on Monday due to financial insolvency, leaving passengers with canceled flights and impacting community air connectivity. The airline, which operated scheduled flights and charters to various Southcentral Alaska destinations, had struggled with debt since the pandemic, according to owner Joel Caldwell. The shutdown follows recent disruptions in rural air service, notably the recent closure of Ravn Alaska.

Kenai Aviation, established in 1959 and purchased by Caldwell in 2018, served communities including Fairbanks, Glennallen, Homer, Seward, Kenai, Valdez, and Unalakleet. Caldwell stated that the company's debt had become unmanageable and that the bank was now demanding repayment, compelling an immediate halt to all operations. The airline's abrupt closure has left travelers with unresolved reservations and communities without reliable scheduled air service.

The impact is particularly severe in Unalakleet, where the community is once again without regular flights, complicating travel options and halting ongoing efforts to secure a new essential air service contract. Local residents expressed surprise at the sudden news, noting recent full flights and ongoing summer operations. The closure underscores ongoing challenges faced by rural aeronautics in Alaska amid financial constraints.

Caldwell expressed hope for future revival of the airline, seeking investment and partnerships to relaunch services. The airline was known for flying to remote communities, supporting vital connectivity in Alaska, but its immediate shutdown highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in regional aviation. Details on refunds, honoring points, or future charters remain uncertain, as Caldwell did not immediately respond to questions.

Overall, the loss of Kenai Aviation marks a significant setback for Alaskan regional air service, coming less than three months after Ravn Alaska also ceased operations, leaving many rural communities with limited flight options.
