Kenya and Hungary have taken a significant step in strengthening their bilateral relations by launching the first direct charter flight from Budapest to Mombasa. The inaugural flight arrived at Moi International Airport with celebrations, including a water cannon salute, marking a new era for tourism and aviation connectivity between the two countries. The route, operated by Smartwings Airlines in partnership with Private Safaris and IBUSZ, is designed to provide a weekly direct connection, facilitating easier travel for tourists from Eastern Europe.
This development aligns with Kenya Airports Authority's strategy to expand its international network, especially to attract high-value tourists to the Kenyan coast. Officials, including KAA’s Chairman Caleb Kositany, highlighted the potential economic and tourism benefits, expecting increased visitor numbers and regional growth. Moi International Airport continues to serve as a vital gateway for international travelers exploring Kenya’s cultural and natural attractions.
The new Budapest–Mombasa route offers Hungarian tourists access to Kenya’s renowned beaches, wildlife safaris, and Swahili cultural experiences. By targeting Eastern European markets, Kenya aims to diversify its tourism industry and foster stronger bilateral relations. The success of the inaugural flight is likely to lead to more routes and increased European tourism, positioning Mombasa as a prominent international tourism hub with sustainable economic growth.
