In response to increasing air travel during the holiday season, three lawmakers in the Philippines have introduced a resolution to investigate airline operational issues, including flight delays, cancellations, and diversions. The House Resolution No. 596 calls for hearings on airline scheduling practices and ticket pricing, aiming to scrutinize the effectiveness of existing policies on air passenger rights.
Representatives Nathan Oducado, Elijah Fernando, and Nikko Daza emphasized the importance of oversight over the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and the Department of Transportation. They are concerned about frequent disruptions and the spikes in airline ticket prices during peak travel times, which often lead to passenger complaints.
Focus of the Inquiry
The resolution seeks to assess whether airlines are providing adequate services such as timely information, refunds, rebooking, and support for vulnerable passengers, including the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities. It also aims to review the implementation of policies that protect air travelers and consider how authorities can enhance accountability and consumer protection.
Oducado stated that the investigation would inform deliberations on House Bill No. 3303, a legislative measure seeking to institutionalize air passenger rights and mandate compensation for delayed and canceled flights. The lawmakers hope this initiative will lead to better industry practices and improved passenger experiences during busy travel seasons.
