Libya is undertaking significant efforts to revitalise its aviation industry by planning the launch of a new national airline, Libyan United Airlines, scheduled to commence operations in early 2026. The country aims to leverage Airbus A320 aircraft to cater to increasing demand for short- and medium-haul routes, reflecting a broader strategy to modernise and unify its aviation assets under a government-backed holding company.

Appointed as the airline's first CEO in December, Ziad Farhoud expressed his enthusiasm on social media about leading the new venture. The initiative is seen as crucial for Libya, which has faced years of aviation disruption, and for establishing a unified aviation sector that can better serve both domestic and regional markets.

"Our vision is to establish Libyan United Airlines as Libya’s premier airline, offering not just flights, but a curated travel experience designed with the passenger in mind," Farhoud stated. "From our hub in Tripoli, we will connect travelers to key destinations across North Africa, the Middle East, and beyond, combining modern service standards with the warmth and hospitality that define Libya."

Currently, Libya's two state-owned airlines—Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways—both operate only a few aircraft, with each airline limited to two, including an Airbus A330 and Airbus A320. The new airline's launch is considered vital as existing carriers lack the financial capability to acquire new aircraft, marking a pivotal step in Libya's aviation development.
