Lufthansa has unveiled a new Boeing 787-9 aircraft adorned with a special livery to commemorate its 100th anniversary. The aircraft, named Berlin and registered as D-ABPU, was delivered to Frankfurt Airport during a festive event that celebrated the milestone. The delivery flight originated from Everett, Washington, a significant Boeing production site.
This aircraft is part of Lufthansa’s broader plan to enhance its fleet with modern, efficient models. The special livery, which features a white crane design on a blue fuselage and marked with '100' and the years '1926 / 2026', will be reflected on six aircraft across the airline’s fleet by fall 2026.
Fleet Modernization and Delivery Challenges
The arrival of the Boeing 787-9 signals Lufthansa's commitment to fleet renewal. However, the airline has faced certification issues with the aircraft’s business-class seats, resulting in only four of the 28 premium seats being available for passengers. This setback affects long-haul capacity and operational plans, compounded by ongoing supply chain disruptions and regulatory hurdles involving the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airline’s CEO highlighted that perseverance has been essential in overcoming these obstacles. Despite delays and setbacks, the delivery embodies Lufthansa’s dedication to modernization and growth, illustrating resilience amidst industry challenges.
