Lufthansa Technik Malta has successfully completed its first Boeing 787-9 cabin upgrade, marking a significant milestone in its capacity expansion. The project included a new seating configuration and a comprehensive modification of the aircraft's interior, demonstrating the company's expanding capabilities in widebody aircraft maintenance and customization.
The work involved converting an existing bay in Malta to accommodate the Boeing 787, with plans to undertake six additional similar modifications before the end of the year. This development aligns with Lufthansa Technik's strategy to deepen its presence in Malta, where it initially established a joint venture with Air Malta in 2002. The company is also investing in a new 6,400 square meter hangar scheduled to open by late 2026, which will further enhance its maintenance infrastructure for widebody and narrowbody aircraft.
In June 2024, Lufthansa Technik received Boeing's certification as a licensed Service Center, enabling it to perform interior modifications on the 787 fleet. With over 1,300 Boeing 787 aircraft worldwide, the company's new capabilities are expected to support increasing retrofit demands, offering customized interior solutions for operators globally.
"The 787 platform requires deep expertise, and our ability to deliver this project with precision and on time clearly demonstrates that we are ready to support even more widebody projects in the future," said Marcus Motschenbacher, VP and COO of Lufthansa Technik's aircraft maintenance services.
Lufthansa Technik Malta also provides line and base maintenance for several Airbus models, including the A320, A320neo, A330/340, and A350. Employing around 600 staff members, the facility is strategically located near Malta International Airport. The ongoing expansion underscores Lufthansa Technik’s commitment to supporting the growing global demand for aircraft modifications, ensuring its access to the evolving market for widebody servicing.
The achievements and future plans of Lufthansa Technik position it as a key regional and global player in aircraft maintenance and upgrades, leveraging its expertise and infrastructure investments to capitalize on increasing retrofit opportunities.
