Malaysia Airlines has announced significant growth in its Indian market, with nearly 77 weekly flights connecting Kuala Lumpur to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. The airline aims to increase this to 80 flights per week by December 2025, driven by rising demand from both metropolitan and smaller Tier 2 cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. India now contributes 11% to the airline's revenue and 20% to passenger traffic, marking its role as a pivotal part of Malaysia Airlines' global expansion plans.
According to Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer at Malaysia Aviation Group, India has become a key operational hub, surpassing traditional markets like Australia and Europe. The airline's strategic growth includes increasing flight frequencies to secondary Indian destinations such as Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram, and exploring new routes to lesser-served cities like Amritsar. These initiatives aim to tap into India's expanding middle class and the surge in international travel from the region.
Strengthening Partnerships and Regional Expansion
Malaysia Airlines has strengthened its alliances through an expanded codeshare agreement with Australian carrier Qantas. This facilitates seamless travel for passengers across Australia and Southeast Asia, connecting Kuala Lumpur with cities including Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, and Launceston, as well as major Australian hubs like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
In addition, its regional affiliate Firefly plans to launch new routes to Krabi, Siem Reap, and Cebu by November 2025, reinforcing its connectivity within Southeast Asia. These efforts are part of Malaysia Airlines’ strategy to enhance regional travel options, accommodate increasing leisure and business travel, and provide affordable travel within the ASEAN region.
Overall, Malaysia Airlines aims to leverage its expanded network and partnerships to establish a stronger foothold in Southeast Asia and capitalize on the robust growth in Indian outbound travelers. The company's ongoing initiatives, including route expansion and partnership development, position it well for sustained growth in the competitive aviation landscape.
