Melbourne Airport is set to improve its passenger services by installing over 70 next-generation Seamless Bag Drop units supplied by Amadeus. As Australia’s busiest 24/7 international and domestic hub, the airport aims to streamline baggage check-in and reduce queues through automated, accessible self-service technology.
The new bag drops feature a side-loading design that eases loading and handling of large or inaccessible items such as wheelchairs. Capable of detecting incorrect bag placement and operating in hybrid mode, the units offer flexibility for fully autonomous or assisted use, enhancing both efficiency and accessibility.
Jim Parashos, Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airport, highlighted the technology's benefits, emphasizing its role in making check-in faster and more accessible. Sarah Samuel of Amadeus noted the support for passengers requiring special assistance, with interfaces designed according to accessibility best practices. Such deployment aligns with Australian airports’ broader adoption of biometric departure processes, aiming to provide a seamless journey for travelers.
