Singapore has launched two new joint research laboratories between the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore Airlines (SIA), and SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC). These facilities are dedicated to advancing aerospace manufacturing capabilities and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into airline operations, aiming to bolster Singapore’s aerospace sector.
The first lab, operational from September 2025 until 2030, focuses on manufacturing high-precision aircraft cabin components, including complex seat structures and aerospace-grade laminates. It also aims to enhance automation in MRO activities, utilizing robotics for tasks such as wheel bearing inspection and brake cleaning, along with smarter capacity planning tools.
The second lab, active since October 2025 and scheduled to run through 2028, leverages GenAI-powered solutions to improve airline operational resilience. Using advanced analytics and AI, the lab seeks to detect potential disruptions early, optimize workflows with co-pilots, and enhance maintenance planning to minimize downtime and improve service quality.
Prof Lim Keng Hui, Assistant Chief Executive of A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council, highlighted the strategic importance of these collaborations, stating, "A*STAR is Singapore’s innovation engine, turning research into industry-ready solutions. Our work with SIA and SIAEC showcases how co-innovation in sustainable manufacturing and AI is future-proofing our aerospace ecosystem."
