Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) provider SkyNRG announced its successful funding close for a project to construct the Netherlands' first large-scale SAF production plant. Located at the Delfzijl chemical park in the northern Netherlands, the facility aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of SAF annually, along with 35,000 tonnes of by-products such as biobased propane, butane, and naphtha. The project secures SkyNRG’s position as a significant player in the aviation decarbonization effort, with KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines – as the primary off-taker.
Founded in 2009 and based in Amsterdam, SkyNRG has historically focused on sourcing, blending, and distributing SAF worldwide. After notable investments—including €175 million from Macquarie in 2023 and €250 million from Dutch pension manager APG in 2025—the company shifted towards becoming a major producer of SAF through new infrastructure investments. Construction of the new plant has already begun, with startup expected in mid-2028.
SkyNRG anticipates the lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction of its SAF to increase from 80% initially to over 90% over time, leveraging Dutch renewable energy sources and reduced reliance on natural gas. Maarten van Dijk, CEO and co-founder, emphasized the importance of increasing SAF production to support future aviation needs and contribute significantly to the industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
