Thailand is moving forward with a significant expansion of its major airports, supported by an investment plan of approximately 80 billion baht, to establish itself as a key regional aviation hub. The government, through the Ministry of Transport, has engaged with Airports of Thailand (AOT) to accelerate projects including expansions at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, and Phuket International Airport.
Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn highlighted the rising demand for air travel, which is driving the need for improved airport infrastructure. The plans involve several major projects, with the first being the East Expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport, estimated at around 12 billion baht, with bidding expected to open later this year and construction slated to begin in early 2027. The expansion is expected to be operational by 2030 after approximately four years of development.
Airport Expansion Projects and Funding
Further projects include Phase 3 of the Don Mueang Airport expansion, revised to a budget of about 69 billion baht due to increased costs related to regional conflicts, and Phase 2 of Phuket Airport's development, which aims to boost passenger capacity from 12.5 million to 18 million annually. The AOT has secured sufficient funding, including cash reserves of around 10 billion baht, to support these developments.
The government’s strategic plan aims to enhance passenger handling capacity and modernize these airports to support Thailand's goal of becoming a major regional travel hub, facilitating economic growth and increased connectivity in Southeast Asia.
