Significant disruption in U.S. air travel occurred on Saturday as over 1,520 flights were canceled nationwide amid ongoing staffing shortages at major airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented capacity restrictions at 40 airports, impacting both domestic departures and arrivals as the government shutdown continues to affect staffing levels in air traffic control towers and centers.

Airlines including Delta, American, United, and Southwest reported cancellation rates varying from 3% to 7%, with delays reaching up to 30%, creating widespread disruption. The Transportation Secretary indicated that further flight reductions might be needed if staffing issues persist, potentially exceeding 10% reductions in flights nationwide.

Impact and Response

The FAA has advised private jet operators to avoid the impacted airports, although no complete bans are in place. Operators are choosing alternative airports to mitigate congestion. Importantly, international flights remain unaffected due to international agreements preventing the U.S. from restricting them, according to officials.

"If the staffing issues continue, the Department of Transportation may ask airlines to cancel more flights," said Sean Duffy.

This disruption marks the largest since the shutdown began over a month ago, prompting concern over future delays and cancellations that could further hinder travel. The situation underscores the need for legislative resolution soon to restore normal airport operations and ensure airline services.
