The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced the selection of a consortium led by Nomura Real Estate Development for its 'eVTOL (Flying Car) Implementation Project (Phase I).' This initiative involves the deployment of electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft from SkyDrive Inc. and Joby Aviation, with the goal of advancing urban air mobility solutions across Tokyo by 2030.
The project encompasses feasibility studies, development of vertiport locations, and public engagement activities such as exhibitions to promote social acceptance. The plan includes starting demonstration flights within the next few years, with the aim of establishing commercial services around 2028.
SkyDrive, a Japan-based eVTOL manufacturer, has already conducted public test flights, and aims to launch commercial operations in 2028. Joby Aviation, based in California, plans to introduce air taxi services in Dubai by 2026 and expand to the Japanese market subsequently. Both companies are working with regulators and stakeholders to ensure safety and feasibility of urban air mobility.
This project aligns with Tokyo's long-term strategy to incorporate next-generation mobility solutions, helping to alleviate congestion and improve urban transportation infrastructure. The collaboration reflects a broader trend to address societal and technical challenges in deploying eVTOLs in future cityscapes.
