Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport continues to be the country’s primary hub for aviation revenue, generating nearly Rs 13 billion in the fiscal year 2081/82, as reported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). The airport managed to serve an estimated 7.8 million passengers and handle over 112,000 flights during the first 11 months of 2025, making it the most active and profitable in Nepal.

The report indicates that other airports like Pokhara International Airport and Gautam Buddha International Airport held the second and third positions in revenue, although their operations remain predominantly domestic. Lamidanda Airport, in contrast, earned only Rs 728, highlighting the disparity among Nepal’s airports. Overall, the CAAN collected approximately Rs 14.69 billion across the nation's aviation sector for the period.

Implications for Nepal’s Aviation Sector

This revenue data underscores the vital role of Tribhuvan International Airport as a fiscal driver for Nepal’s aviation industry. The high passenger traffic and flight volume reflect the airport’s strategic importance for international connectivity and economic growth. The dominance of the Kathmandu-based airport also signals ongoing infrastructure and operational challenges faced by smaller airports nationwide.

Experts suggest that continued investment in Nepal's airports could further enhance revenue streams and passenger comfort, supporting the country’s tourism and business sectors. The data presents a positive outlook but also emphasizes the need for diversified airport development to reduce reliance on a single major hub.

Looking ahead, authorities intend to expand capacity and service offerings at key airports, aiming to boost revenue and improve service quality across Nepal. The focus remains on balancing domestic and international traffic to maximize economic benefits.
