The beginning of winter has prompted UK-based independent Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) providers to increase their operational capacity. Caerdav and BCT Aviation Maintenance have announced significant investments aimed at meeting the heightened demand for aircraft servicing during this period.

Caerdav recently inaugurated a fourth maintenance line at its facility in St. Athan, Wales, which doubles its servicing capacity within 18 months. This expansion involves comprehensive remodeling of hangar space and back shop capabilities, allowing the company to handle multiple aircraft simultaneously and expand its range of in-house services such as structural repairs and non-destructive testing.

Industry trends and strategic responses

According to Phil Swanson, Caerdav’s commercial director, the ongoing growth in airline fleets, coupled with supply chain disruptions at major aircraft manufacturers, has led to airlines operating older fleets for longer durations. Consequently, the demand for extensive maintenance, especially on aging narrowbody aircraft, is expected to grow.

"The new line will be truly valued by our customers, particularly for structural work on aging narrowbody aircraft,"

Swanson stated. "We are seeing growing numbers of heavy maintenance checks requiring structural repairs and modifications. Our ability to deploy experienced structural engineers will be a key advantage."

BCT Aviation Maintenance is preparing for its peak winter maintenance schedule at East Midlands Airport, with plans to service 12 Boeing 737NG aircraft from October through March 2026. The company’s recent investments in infrastructure and electric vehicles emphasize its commitment to growth and operational excellence.

These expansions and investments reflect broader industry shifts, including the extension of aircraft service lives, fewer new aircraft deliveries, and an increasing requirement for rapid, flexible maintenance solutions. These developments are vital to ensuring safety, operational efficiency, and aircraft availability during the demanding winter season.
