Venezuela has enacted a significant aviation ban targeting six international airlines, following a US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory warning of escalating security threats and military activity in the region. The Venezuelan government justified this move as an assertion of sovereignty amid heightened tensions with the United States.
On November 21, 2025, the FAA issued a NOTAM warning of hazardous conditions in Venezuelan airspace due to increased military readiness, GPS interference, and US deployment efforts in the Caribbean, purportedly aimed at combating drug trafficking. Several carriers, including Iberia, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Avianca, LATAM, and Gol, temporarily suspended flights to Caracas. Venezuela’s INAC responded by setting a 48-hour deadline for these airlines to resume operations; upon non-compliance, their operating permits were revoked.
Airspace Control as a Political Tool
Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro framed the airline restrictions as a demonstration of national sovereignty, asserting Venezuela’s resilience against external influence. In his televised address, Maduro declared the country “invincible,” signaling that foreign airlines would not dictate flight operations within Venezuelan airspace.
