United Airlines is implementing a 5% reduction in its flight capacity in response to surging fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The airline's CEO, Scott Kirby, announced that some services, including routes to Tel Aviv and Dubai, have been suspended as the airline adjusts to higher operating costs associated with increased jet fuel prices.

Fuel prices have approximately doubled since the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, leading to regional instability and a spike in oil prices. Despite these challenges, United Airlines plans to restore its full schedule by the upcoming fall and continues with its long-term fleet acquisition plans, including delivery of about 120 new aircraft this year and around 130 more by April 2028.

Strategic Fleet and Cost Management

Kirby stressed United’s resilience, noting that the airline does not anticipate taking drastic measures like those seen in past crises. The airline remains committed to its growth strategy, including acquiring Boeing 787 aircraft, even amid the current fuel cost pressures. The company's fuel price assumptions reach as high as $175 per barrel, with prices remaining above $100 through next year.

While bookings have remained strong, Kirby acknowledged that prolonged high energy costs might influence future demand. The airline anticipates being strategically positioned should oil prices remain elevated longer than expected, allowing it to act advantageously relative to competitors.
