Airlines for America (A4A) has publicly supported the bipartisan Aviation Funding Solvency Act (H.R. 6086), aiming to prevent disruptions in the U.S. aviation system due to government shutdowns. The legislation proposes using funds already paid by users to sustain safety operations and essential agency staffing, including air traffic controllers, during any future funding lapses.
The organization highlighted the recent shutdown's impact, which led to the cancellation of over 9,200 flights and caused significant economic losses to the travel and tourism industries. A4A emphasized the need for legislative action to ensure that the FAA and its workforce can operate without interruption, safeguarding national safety standards and infrastructure.
Advocacy for Legislation
A4A urged lawmakers to pass the bill promptly, noting that it would allocate existing funds to cover necessary expenses, thereby avoiding the safety risks and economic costs associated with unpaid federal employees during shutdowns.
"Policymakers must fulfill their responsibilities and spare the U.S. economy from further damage caused by funding lapses," stated Christopher T. Sununu, President & CEO of A4A. The bill's enactment would help maintain the operational integrity of the aviation system during future government funding crises.
