Marissa Bode, an actress known for her role in the musical 'Wicked,' has spoken out about an incident involving Southern Airways where she was denied boarding a flight due to her disability. She explained that although the airline reached out to her afterward to apologize and address the situation, the incident highlighted ongoing issues with accessibility standards in the airline industry.
Bode stated she had contacted the airline in advance to arrange accommodations, but when she approached the gate with her wheelchair, staff asked her to stand and then denied boarding, citing policy restrictions on aircraft with fewer than 28 passengers requiring passengers to be able to climb stairs. This requirement conflicts with protections offered under the Air Carrier Access Act, which prohibits discrimination against disabled travelers.
The actress criticized the practice of using aircraft size to justify inaccessibility, calling it "blatant segregation." She emphasized that disability accommodations should be proactive, not reactive, and urged airlines to employ disabled individuals in decision-making roles to foster meaningful change. The airline's mobility director was reportedly remorseful and is conducting an internal review while maintaining contact with Bode to improve future policies.
Despite the negative experience, Bode acknowledged that Southern Airways has shown a receptive attitude and expressed hope that the airline will make substantive improvements. She reiterated her desire for systemic change that ensures disabled travelers are not left behind in air travel accessibility initiatives.
