The African Union has announced a comprehensive plan to invest US$30 billion into modernizing the continent’s aviation infrastructure. This initiative seeks to support the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and promote economic integration across African nations. Unveiled at a recent infrastructure summit, the plan emphasizes the strategic importance of air transport for regional development.

The strategy involves significant upgrades to airports, with US$10 billion allocated for infrastructure improvements, and US$8 billion aimed at enhancing communication, navigation, and meteorological systems. Advanced technologies such as Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM) and System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) will be incorporated to optimize operations and airspace management. Sustainability features, including renewable energy at airports, are also included to align with green standards.

"As we modernize African skies, every project is designed to meet global green standards, reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and position African aviation as an attractive destination for climate-focused capital," said AU Commissioner Lerato Mataboge. The plan aims to mobilize public funds while attracting private investments through partnerships with Development Finance Institutions and AUDA-NEPAD.

Leading officials and airline executives from Ethiopia and Angola discussed collaborative efforts needed to build a connected, efficient, and environmentally sustainable aviation network to support Africa’s growing population and economic ambitions.
