Africa's aviation industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by increasing international and domestic flight capacity. According to a white paper by the African Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA), the sector has seen an 18.6% rise in international seats scheduled from January to October 2026, reaching 129.5 million. This expansion takes place amid geopolitical tensions and highlights Africa’s strategic position within global air routes.

Major African hubs such as Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and Johannesburg are emerging as vital transit points for international flights, with the report emphasizing their strategic importance. In North Africa, countries like Egypt continue to dominate, with over 30 million departure seats; Ethiopia and Kenya are notable for their rapid growth in seat capacity, with Ethiopian Airlines maintaining its status as the continent’s largest international carrier with 23.8 million seats.

Despite the positive outlook, infrastructure and policy constraints persist. Airports operating at or beyond capacity, limited intra-African connectivity, and visa restrictions present barriers to further expansion. However, significant investments are underway, including Ethiopia’s Bishoftu International Airport slated for 2030, designed to handle 60 million passengers annually, and ongoing upgrades in Morocco, Rwanda, and South Africa.

Experts believe that if investments continue and visa policies become more progressive, Africa can sustain its status as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism regions. These developments underscore the continent’s potential to capitalize on its geographic position and evolving aviation infrastructure, projecting a future of continued expansion despite existing challenges.
