Air Astana has concluded its significant shareholding reorganization by fully divesting its remaining stake previously held by BAe Systems, according to disclosures made on March 19. The British aerospace giant sold over 6 million depositary receipts for USD 5.1 each to institutional investors, marking the end of its investment in the airline.
BAe Systems, a founding partner in Air Astana since its establishment in 2001 through a joint venture, had previously reduced its holdings to 16.9% following the airline's initial public offering in 2024 and divested an additional 10.1% in 2025. The recent sale reflects a strategic shift, as acknowledged by the company.
In conjunction with the divestment, Air Astana has renewed its share buyback program, purchasing nearly 1.5 million shares (about 0.4% of its shares) in March 2026. The airline has been executing multiple buyback tranches since 2024 to optimize capital management.
Air Astana operates a fleet of 35 aircraft, serving 41 destinations across 73 routes with 90 flights daily, from its hub at Astana Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport. The airline remains a key scheduled carrier in Kazakhstan, continuously adjusting its capital strategy to strengthen its market position.
